From the Associated Press, we hear that though Toyota is devoted to getting an electric car option on the roads, they still believe that the hybrid Toyota options are going to be the best option for fuel-efficient vehicles for some time to come.
To that end, Toyota vice president Masatami Takimoto has been saying for some time now that there will be a hybrid model of all Toyota vehicles currently available by 2020. If they achieve this, it will be the first major car company to offer an entire lineup of hybrid vehicles.
So whatever happened to the electric car? The story goes that though the technology is being developed as quickly as possible, electric Toyota cars are still far more expensive than the average consumer can afford, due to the cost of the lithium-ion battery that currently powers them. That said, Toyota still hopes to have an electric Prius available for short commuting soon.
A good bridge between the two is Toyota’s plug-in hybrid, which switches from the battery to the regular hybrid engine when the electric power runs out. This kind of vehicle still qualifies technically as a hybrid Toyota. A straight electric car is probably not in the near future unless a major innovation comes out of nowhere.
Since hybrids are likely to be the best fuel-efficiency and environmental option for some time to come, Toyota lovers should feel no compunction that their new hybrid Toyota is going to become obsolete. The hybrid Toyota Prius is here to stay – soon to be joined by hybrid versions of all Toyota’s other models.
