Gas pump offering premium fuelAs long as people have been filling up their certified Toyotas, they’ve heard legends about the best way to do so. It seems like there are as many stories and ideas as there are people. So, how do you tell the fact from the fiction? Read on, and learn how to avoid the myths when you fuel up.

One of the most common ideas we hear as a certified Toyota dealer is that you should always buy your gas in the morning when it is coolest. It’s true, gasoline is denser at cooler temperatures, and it expands about 1% for every 15 degree increase in temperature. This is unlikely to save you much, however. Not only is that amount pretty small, but the holding tank itself is underground. Sure, there are temperature fluctuations, but they are much milder than the temperature changes above ground. You may save a penny a fill up on your certified Toyota, but is it really worth the energy?

Another urban legend is that you should fill up your tank when it is only half empty. The idea is that gasoline evaporates, and the more air you have in your tank, the more vapors can fill it and escape when you open the cap. While there is a bit of truth to this, think of it this way. Is the money you’re saving worth stopping for gas almost twice as often? You may be saving pennies, but you’re losing a lot of time doing it. You can save some money by making sure the cap on your pre-owned certified Toyota is airtight. After all, vapors can escape even with the cap on if it has a poor seal.

No matter when or how you fuel up your certified Toyota, you should know the facts. If you want to refuel at dawn when your tank is at the half way mark, go right ahead. It certainly won’t hurt anything to do so. It may not save you time or money, but at least you’ll never run out of gas.
