Your Toyota dealer has learned that Scott Joplin was one of the preeminent figures of early jazz. Known as the “King of Ragtime,” he was a pianist and composer who achieved quite a bit of fame with his popular music. Best known for “Maple Leaf Rag,” he wrote other ragtime standards as well. He also wrote a couple of operas, and there are fans of his music still today, more than 90 years after his death.  in fact, he was awarded a posthumous Pulitzer Prize in 1976 for his incredible contribution to American music.

The Scott Joplin House is located in St Louis, an it is situated in an area that was once filled with honky-tonks and dives that were the signature of the early jazz scene. You can tour the house, which was built in 1902, where he lived and where he composed many of his most famous works. There is also a museum on the property that charts Joplin’s life, music, and career over the years he was composing. There is also a café that recreates the feel of the old joints where Joplin once played, so you can get the really great feel of the era in which he was composing and performing.
