Missouri is filled with places important to American history, and your Toyota dealer knows of another exciting place you can visit. The Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site is located inside of St Louis, and would be a quick family drive from St Peters or St Charles. So, head to the car and get ready for a short drive. It’s time to visit a piece of history!
Ulysses S Grant was an important Northern general during the Civil War, attaining the status of General-In-Chief of the Northern Army. Your Toyota dealer has learned that it was he who, in 1865, accepted the surrender of Southern general Robert E. Lee, signaling the end of this brutal war. Four years later, Grant went on to become the 18th president of the United States. While he was reported to have been tolerant of governmental corruption, he also headed up Reconstruction and is lauded for his efforts to help win rights for the newly freed African-Americans.
The Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site contains the childhood home of Grant’s wife, Julia Dent. The home, called White Haven, has been preserved for people to visit and learn about his life. Painted a vivid green, it is actually the color it was in Grant’s day; the name White Haven came from the family’s New England roots, not from the color of the house. Your Toyota dealer has learned that the home contains a museum, as well as interpretive tours of the history and times of this president, which will give you a first hand view of the history of this home.
Take it from your Toyota dealer—it’s hard to find history any closer than your own back yard. With this exciting location just minutes from Florrisant, you can arrive quickly and have the time to appreciate the home and the history it holds.
