The new 5th generation 2010 Toyota 4-Runner offers a variety of fuel economy choices, the engine on a standard 4Runner is a 2.7 liter four cylinder The four cylinder engine can only be ordered with a two wheel drive system. You can expect to get 25 mpg/city driving.  The SR5 2.7 liter 6 cylinder 2WD has a fuel economy rating of 17 mpg/city and 23mpg/highway driving.

With the four wheel drive system, the fuel economy rating is the same for city driving but drops to 22mpg on the highway. The six cylinder-equipped 4Runner can tow up to five thousand pounds but towing will lessen its fuel economy ratings.

Three trim levels are; the SR5, Trail and Limited. The 2WD SR5 comes with a 2.7-liter inline-4  with 157 hp and 178 pound-feet of torque, while all other 4Runners get a 4.0-liter V6 with 270 hp and 278 lb-ft. A four-speed automatic is paired with the inline-4, while a five-speed automatic is fitted to the V6. The SR5 and Limited is offered in either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive (part-time system on SR5, full-time system on the Limited), while the Trail comes only with part-time 4WD.

The SR5 comes standard with alloy wheels, skid plates, fog lights, air-conditioning, cruise control, and a CD/MP3 audio system. The Trail (available only with 4WD and the V6) adds a hood scoop, a locking rear differential, Crawl Control (which automatically adjusts throttle and brakes when ascending or descending hills), a back-up camera, water-resistant upholstery and Bluetooth. The luxurious Limited includes the X-REAS adaptive suspension dampers (for controlling body roll), keyless, automatic climate control, and an upgraded audio system. The third-row seat and a navigation system are options.

The current Toyota 4Runner has a truck-like solid rear axle for superior off-road performance. The available Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) can disconnect the front and rear stabilizer bars at speeds below 40 mph for greater wheel articulation over uneven terrain so don’t expect it to drive like a crossover — this is a traditional SUV with serious off-road capabilities.
