Today automobiles have many new technical gadgets that can easily distract drivers on the road. Motorists spend a fair amount of time plugging in and changing songs on Mp3 players, looking at maps and entering street addresses on the screen of their navigators, and doing many other non-driving tasks while at the wheel of their vehicles. However useful these products and gadgets may be, they can pose a serious hazard to drivers, by averting attention from the road.

Mobile phones may be the worst offenders when it comes to distracting drivers, some studies have shown that motorists talking on the cell phone while driving actually exhibited worse driving habits than those who were under the influence of alcohol while driving.

Changing CD’s or altering the song on your mp3 players is also a big distraction.

Satellite navigation systems are an option found in many cars today, even if your car didn’t come with a navigation system, chances are you purchased an aftermarket version. These are great products, but it’s important to input addresses when your vehicle is at a stop, not while driving down the road.  Staring at the screen too long can definitely be hazardous.

Hands-free sets are easy to purchase for the majority of mobile phones nowadays and although it is  advised to pull over to take a phone call, using a hands free or Blutooth alternative is preferable than holding the phone with one hand while you are operating the vehicle.

For those who do a lot of driving you may feel yourself becoming very tired. If you feel yourself losing concentration, take a break and give yourself 15 minutes to wake up, have a cup of coffee, walk around and stretch a bit, and avoid driving for too long during one stretch.
